Terroir is the influence of soil, subsoil, climate, grape variety, rootstocks, work in vineyard…terroir cannot explain everything. It simply exists.

Terroir means authentic wines

The idea that special vine-sites produce great wines is quite old. The philosopher, John Locke, who visited Bordeaux in 1677 noticed this phenomenon and later described differences of soil of certain places.
Another example from history: in a book published in London in 1728 the vineyard of Montrachet was mentioned as having a special terroir greatness (Montrachet is in Cote d´Or area of Burgundy).
Logically especially French winemakers and vintners often tend to stress the influence of terroir. In past „Vin terroite“ meant a rustic wine with a certain charm. The wine called „gout de terroir“ was often made by overripen grapes and was full of flavour = full of terroir.

The human touch

Winery Znovín Znojmo has been promoting the terroir of Znojmo Wine Region for many years. Reputation of Znovin´ wines is based on quality and the quality is directly connected to local vineyards. The reputation for quality and value is integral to Znovín´s philosophy.  Terroir is the key to the quality.  That is why Znovín supported the idea to map and describe in full geological details all vine-sites in Znojmo wine region. This is a truly unique and heroic act.
Thus Znovín´s winemakers can choose for Znovín´s wines fruit from the best sites. Combination of appropriate sensitive vinification and detailed knowledge of vine-sites bring together a special synergie, the right know-how.
Znovín Znojmo uses own natural strains of yeast coming from individual single vineayard for making wine labeled Terroir Levure (prokliknutí na Terroir Levure).

Wines of the Terroir Club

Nowadays terroir excites many connoissers here. How else to explain that wines from certain vineyards are different, individual, attractive?  How to explain to that certain single vineyards (=grand cru vineyards) give to wines particular characteristics, particular own typicity?
How to explain popularity of the vine-site Weinperky (village Miroslav), aroma and finesse of wines from picturesque Šobes, concentrated wines (vintage 2006) from Volné pole (village Hostěradice) or typical minerality and elegance of wines from the vine-site U tří dubů (village Stošíkovice). Terroir is a diamond

Winemakers from Znovín know physical characteristics of local vineyards. Their serious respect to local  terroir is the most important element in making Znovín´s wines.  No wonder that The Conception  of the Terroir is a vital part of company´s philosophy. Terroir is a beautiful diamond but without winemaker´s skills cannot shine (proklik na odrůdy : principal varieties a medaile: medals).
