Czech Wine Act

was passed in 2004. It is based on Austrian and German wine laws and divides Czech lands into 2 major wine areas:

Czech and Moravian

In Moravia there are 4 regions:

  • Znojmo, Mikulov, Velké Pavlovice and Slovácko
  • Znojmo region is famous for its terroir – see wines from Terroir Club and Terroir Levure

The Winery Znovín Znojmo operates in ZNOJMO WINE REGION.

The principal varieties are Pinot Blanc(Rulandské bílé), Pinot Gris (Rulandské šedé), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rhine Riesling (Rýnský ryzlink), Italian=Welsch Riesling (Vlašský ryzlink), Gruner Veltliner (Veltlínské zelené), Muller-Thurgau,  Moravian Muscat (Moravský muškát), Pálava etc.
The most popular red wines are made from Saint Laurent (Svatovavřinecké), Pinot Noir=Red Rulander (Rulandské červené) , Frankovka=Lemberger, Zweigeltrebe=Zweigelt=Rotburger , Blauer Portugieser (Modrý Portugal) etc.

Must enrichment or chaptalisation before fermentation is not permitted.

Late Harvest/Late Picking/Spaetlese -  Pozdní sběr
(in must 21kg of sugar per 100 litres)

Selection of grapes – Auslese – Výběr z hroznů
(in must 24kg of sugar per 100 liters)

Special Selection – Beerenauslese - Selection of Grains Nobles - Výběr z bobulí
(in must 24kg of sugar per 100 liters)

Special Selection –  Trockenbeerenauslese - Výběr z cibéb (botrytised grapes, noble rot)
(in must 32 kg of sugar per 100 litres)

Ice Wine  - Eiswein - Ledové víno
(picking when temperature is min. - 7 degrees) )

Straw Wine-Strohwin -Vin de Paille - Slámové víno
(drying grapes on straw mats)

Ice wines and straw wines are famous for most intriguing balance of highly concentrated sweetness and acidity.
